Mō te mahi| The work

Be part of telling the story of life in Aotearoa New Zealand and apply to be a Census Collector!

The census is the only survey in Aotearoa New Zealand that covers the whole population. It provides the most complete picture of life in our cities, towns, suburbs, and rural areas. The data collected helps the government plan services including hospitals, kōhanga reo, schools, roads, and public transport

Mō te tūnga | The role

As a Census Collector, you will support the delivery of a successful 2023 Census operation by undertaking census field work in your assigned area. You will represent Stats NZ on the doorstep which will involve interacting, engaging, listening to and understanding people from a diverse range of cultures, age groups and socio-economic backgrounds.

You will report directly to a local Team Leader and through face-to-face interaction, you will help people in your community by:

  • Understanding the value of census
  • Supporting, influencing and motivating the public to take part in the census
  • Delivering and collecting census materials and information to and from households and non-private dwellings, which may include hospitals, residential care facilities, campsites etc.

This is even more important for Māori, Pacific and migrant communities, who have historically had lower rates of response and, as a result, have not featured clearly in the data New Zealand uses to fund things like hospitals and healthcare, schools, and housing. Helping your community to understand this link is crucial and a key part of the role you will hold within the operation.
