Job Description

  • Rewarding work, in a fun, charitable, environment

  • Recruiting for multiple sites across Auckland

  • Competitive hourly rate

Who are we?
EcoMatters Environment Trust is a well-established charity that helps provide the community with knowledge and tools to restore nature, grow food, reduce waste, ride and fix bikes, and live more sustainably.

Our Bike Hubs are an award-winning service, and in the last six years, we’ve helped thousands of people discover or rediscover how fun it is to get on a bike. We already have four very successful Bike Hubs in Auckland and have plans to open five more later in 2023. The Bike Hubs offer visitors:
*free help and advice for bike maintenance and basic repairs - this is all about working alongside our visitors to teach them these skills
*used bikes for sale - these bikes are donated, repaired and safety checked, then sold at an affordable price to help fund our services
*new and used bike parts and accessories for sale
*maps, route guidance, safe cycling advice and connections into other organisations and local businesses that can help with cycling advice and support.

Our sites are open Thursday through to Sunday from 10am to 2pm. See this brief video for more about our Bike Hub service: bit.ly/bikehub-video.

What is the job?
We are looking for Bike Hub Coordinators for several sites across Auckland (New Lynn, Queens Wharf in central Auckland, Onehunga, Pakuranga, Mt Eden, Grey Lynn and Manukau).

The most important skills we are seeking in candidates for these roles is a great love of interacting with a wide range of people, an interest in bikes and helping others get started with cycling and a practical, hands-on attitude. You don’t need to have extensive knowledge or experience in bike mechanics - we will teach you all you need to know about the basic bike maintenance skills required in this role (we only require skills to a basic level).

Candidates will need to commit to working during the Bike Hub’s usual opening hours which are Thursday to Sunday, from 10am to 2pm (although we are open to applications from people who could commit to working at least one day each weekend-excluding leave). During weekends you’ll be supported by an assistant, plus we also have fabulous volunteer support as well. There are some additional administration hours which can be managed flexibly.

This is a role which provides a great opportunity for you to bring your own style and ideas to the Bike Hub where you would work. Key aspects of the role include:

*Responsibility for day to day running of the site (opening/closing/daily set-up)
*Helping customers with basic bike repairs/maintenance and general cycling advice
*Sale of used bikes and parts
*Repairs and safety checks on donated bike
*Supervising other staff and volunteers
This really is a very rewarding role, working in an exciting and dynamic community trust. We offer competitive remuneration, with a team of passionate people.

What we are looking for:
*passion for working with a wide range of people
*ability to work independently
*interest in and evidence that you are keen to support more people to get cycling
*willingness to and interest in to learning basic bike maintenance skills

How to apply

Applications will be evaluated as they come in. Please note there is no formal closing date for this role, if you are interested we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

If you are passionate about bikes and engaging with the community, please apply now. We’d love to hear from you anyway, as there will be plenty of training provided for the bike maintenance skills.
